Tunable DWDM Transceiver Commissioning Checklist

A tunable DWDM transceiver is not ready merely because the host recognizes it. Commissioning must prove the exact host support, configured optical frequency, channel-grid fit, passive or ROADM path, transmitter state and received signal quality. Make the channel assignment from a controlled network record, not from memory or wavelength labels alone.

Confirm the module and host operating context

Record the exact transceiver, host platform, line card, port and software release. Verify that the platform supports tuning for that module and exposes the required configuration and diagnostics.

Confirm the client rate, line-side optical mode, required FEC and power class. A host can read the module while leaving it in low-power mode, holding the laser off or refusing the requested application.

Do not assume that a tunable module intended for one transport architecture can replace any fixed-channel DWDM optic. Reach, modulation, grid, power and management behavior remain exact-product decisions.

Assign frequency from the channel plan

Use the network's authoritative channel inventory. Record frequency in THz and the corresponding channel identifier used by the platform. Wavelength in nm can be included for human reference, but frequency avoids ambiguity when systems use different naming conventions.

Check:

  • supported tuning range;
  • fixed-grid or flex-grid behavior;
  • allowed channel spacing;
  • target mux/demux, filter or ROADM passband;
  • existing services on adjacent or identical channels;
  • both endpoint and intermediate-node assignments.

A configurable value appearing in the CLI does not prove that the complete optical path supports it.

Tune under change control

Save the pre-change configuration and diagnostics. Apply the frequency using the documented platform procedure. Record the operator, time, port and intended service.

Verify the module reports the requested frequency or channel and reaches the expected ready state. Check wavelength-unlocked, thermoelectric-cooler, laser or module-fault indications when the platform exposes them.

Do not connect an unverified transmitter to a live amplified or shared WDM path. Coordinate the turn-up with the channel plan and the site's optical-safety and change-control procedures.

Verify the optical path and power window

Trace the channel through every mux/demux, add/drop stage, amplifier and cross-connect. Confirm connector type, fiber route and the intended endpoint.

Record transmit and receive power at both ends and compare it with the exact module limits and network design. For amplified systems, per-channel power, total composite power, gain equalization and optical signal-to-noise ratio may matter. These values require a network-specific engineering plan; no universal target applies.

The WDM channel inventory guide covers channel ownership, path records and baseline evidence, while the coherent and high-speed interconnect guide provides additional context for FEC and complex optical applications.

Validate service, not only carrier presence

Confirm interface state, alarms, FEC mode, pre-FEC or post-FEC evidence where available and traffic behavior. Save a clean baseline after the service is stable.

Monitor the link through the planned observation window and review changes in receive power, corrected errors, temperature and wavelength lock. A carrier with rising errors or marginal power is not a completed acceptance.

Commissioning checklist

  1. Verify exact host, release and tunable-module support.
  2. Confirm client rate, optical application, power class and FEC.
  3. Lock the channel assignment in the network inventory.
  4. Check frequency, grid spacing and every filter passband.
  5. Save pre-change configuration and diagnostics.
  6. Tune using the platform-specific procedure.
  7. Confirm ready state, frequency lock and laser state.
  8. Measure or record both-direction optical performance.
  9. Run traffic and review error evidence.
  10. Update the channel record and rollback package.

Frequently asked questions

Should I configure wavelength or frequency?

Use the control accepted by the platform and record both where practical. Frequency in THz is often the clearer channel-plan reference.

Can two tunable modules use any shared channel?

Only if both modules, hosts and the complete optical path support the intended application and frequency. Avoid channel collisions with existing services.

Why is the module detected but the laser remains off?

Possible causes include low-power state, administrative state, incomplete application selection, platform rejection or a module fault. Use the host-specific diagnostics.

Does correct frequency guarantee the link?

No. Power, FEC, modulation, filters, route loss, OSNR and endpoint compatibility can still prevent service.

Can a tunable optic replace a fixed DWDM spare?

Sometimes, but only after validating host support, grid, power, reach, optical application and operational procedure.

What should be saved after commissioning?

Save module identity, host/software, frequency, channel path, power, alarms, FEC, error baseline, traffic result and the final configuration.

Review the channel plan before ordering

Share the endpoint platforms, software, client rate, intended frequency or channel, grid, passive and amplified path, measured loss, power targets, FEC and quantities. Axonode can help coordinate a tunable-optics BOM and project-specific validation requirements.
